Stir called off as sugar mills accept demands

The Times of India (Mumbai edition) - - TIMES CITY -

A fter a meeting of farmers’ representatives with sugar mill operators, the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana led by MP Raju Shetti cancelled its proposed ‘chakka jam’ agitation that was scheduled for Sunday. The operators assured the farmers that mills will pay fair and remunerative price in one go, unlike last year when it was divided into two installments. Also, mill operators will pay the amount on 9.5% recovery rate instead of 10% fixed by the Centre. Shetti had sought Rs 3,100 per tonne for sugarcane but mills have agreed to pay Rs 2,750 per tonne. The rest will be paid if market conditions improves.
