Nasa’s In­Sight to land on Mars on Nov 27

Mum­bai: Nasa’s eighth land­ing mis­sion to Mars, In­te­rior Ex­plo­ration Us­ing Seis­mic In­ves­ti­ga­tions, Geodesy and Heat Trans­port (In­Sight), will touch down on the sur­face of the Red Planet af­ter mid­night (IST) on Novem­ber 27, In­dian-Amer­i­can Anita Sen­gupta, pro­fes­sor of as­tro­nau­tics, Univer­sity of South­ern Cal­i­for­nia, an­nounced on Satur­day. Sen­gupta, who played a key role in the land­ing of Nasa’s one­ton Cu­rios­ity rover on Mars in Au­gust 2012, said at Nehru Science Cen­tre,Worli, that In­Sight will be the first mis­sion to study the in­te­rior of Mars. Her pre­sen­ta­tion was in cel­e­bra­tion of In­ter­na­tional Science Cen­tre and Science Mu­seum Day. Sen­gupta, whose fa­ther is from IIT-Bom­bay, said In­Sight will only con­sist of a lan­der and not a rover.

Cu­rios­ity will con­tinue to op­er­ate for some time and the Mars 2020 mis­sion is on track, she added.— Srini­vas Lax­man
