Nasa’s InSight to land on Mars on Nov 27
Mumbai: Nasa’s eighth landing mission to Mars, Interior Exploration Using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight), will touch down on the surface of the Red Planet after midnight (IST) on November 27, Indian-American Anita Sengupta, professor of astronautics, University of Southern California, announced on Saturday. Sengupta, who played a key role in the landing of Nasa’s oneton Curiosity rover on Mars in August 2012, said at Nehru Science Centre,Worli, that InSight will be the first mission to study the interior of Mars. Her presentation was in celebration of International Science Centre and Science Museum Day. Sengupta, whose father is from IIT-Bombay, said InSight will only consist of a lander and not a rover.
Curiosity will continue to operate for some time and the Mars 2020 mission is on track, she added.— Srinivas Laxman
