TIMES New Delhi: The question on Quora read: “Does India actually need a bullet train?” Of the 83 answers that the post received was one from the union minister for railways and coal Piyush Goyal himself. In the long answer accompanied by infographics featuring pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Goyal said that bullet trains will enhance transportation capabilities, job growth, and development in India. As of 7pm on Tuesday, the minister’s answer had over 12,000 “upvotes” which are one-click virtual endorsements by Quora users. Quora is a popular social question and answer website.

“New technology has not always been adopted easily, and has at most times seen resistance. However, history shows us that new technology and advancements are highly beneficial for the country. For example, we see that naysayers had also criticised the start of the Rajdhani Trains in 1968. Even the chairman of the railway board opposed it; such things keep India backward. But today, they are the trains that everyone wishes to travel in,” the minister said in his answer posted Monday. “The minuscule interest rate of 0.1% and the repayment time of 50 years is (sic) economically advantageous to our economy…as the repayment of loan is to begin after 15 years of receiving the loan,” he further added enumerating the cost benefits in bullet points.

Goyal said that the bullet train project will give a boost to jobs and manufacturing in India and that “total 12 sta- tions, 4 stations in Maharashtra & 8 in Gujarat, will emerge as economic powerhouses powered by easy travel.” He also added that 300 Indian railways officials are being trained in Japan, and that the High Speed Rail Training Institute being developed at Vadodara would train 4,000 workers.

The person who posted the question is one Shushant Kumar. His Quora profile says he works at HCL Technologies in Hyderabad and has studied at IIT-Delhi. Although he posted the question on September 15, the minister answered it this Monday.

Since August, Goyal has answered five questions on Quora. Other Indian politicians and ministers active on the social network include Biju Janata Dal politicians Baijayant ‘Jay’ Panda and former union law minister Ashwani Kumar. Union minister of state for agriculture and farmers’ welfare, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat is among the most prolific, having posted 75 answers since October 2016.
