Cong plans Dalit campaign to corner BJP
New Delhi: Congress is set to kickstart a national series of ‘Save Constitution’ conventions, a campaign designed to pile pressure on BJP on the Dalit front amid anger in the community over “dilution” of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Congress chief Rahul Gandhi will open the inaugural meeting in Delhi on April 23, where he is expected to attack the ruling BJP for “rise in atrocities against Dalits” and “a threat to rights like the POA Act, reservations and the Constitution”. AICC (SC cell) chairman Nitin Raut told TOI that ‘Save Constitution’ conventions wo- uld travel from Delhi to MP, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, UP and Maharashtra, besides other states.
The choice of BJP-ruled states shows that Congress is looking to corner the rival among the Dalit community in the wake of a series of controversies, the most recent being the Supreme Court order putting checks on the implementation of the POA Act.
