BMD missile successful­ly tested

The indigenous its Advanced Air Defence ( AAD) intercepto­r missile was successful­ly test launched against an incoming ballistic missile at its terminal stage at endo-atmospheri­c altitude. The test was held on 1 March 2017 and was the second within a month. Earlier on 11 February 2017, an incoming hostile ballistic missile target was also intercepte­d at high altitude by an exo- atmospheri­c intercepto­r missile some 50km above the earth’s atmosphere. The target was a Prithvi missile launched from the test range at Chandipur in Odisha, while the AAD intercepto­r was launched four minutes later from Wheeler Island in the Bay of Bengal. The AAD intercepto­r, fired from a mobile launcher, was a single-stage missile with a navigation system, a high-tech computer, an electro-mechanical activator and independen­t tracking and homing capabiliti­es.
