US Na­tional Se­cu­rity Ad­vi­sor HR McMaster met with PM Naren­dra Modi, NSA Ajit Doval and For­eign Sec­re­tary S Jais­hankar dur­ing his visit to In­dia in April 2017 “wherein both In­dia and the US have reaf­firmed their strate­gic part­ner­ship that in­volves not only grow­ing de­fence ties but also shared per­spec­tives of the re­gion in­clud­ing a con­flu­ence on Afghanistan. Dis­cus­sions cov­ered the sit­u­a­tion in Afghanistan, West Asia and North Ko­rea.”

The lead­ers “ex­changed views on how both coun­tries can work to­gether to ef­fec­tively ad­dress the chal­lenge of ter­ror­ism and to ad­vance regional peace, se­cu­rity and sta­bil­ity”. A state­ment is­sued noted that the US reaf­firmed In­dia’s sta­tus as a “ma­jor de­fence part­ner” even as the two sides dis­cussed a range of bi­lat­eral and regional is­sues, in­clud­ing their shared in­ter­ests in in­creas­ing de­fence and counter-ter­ror­ism co­op­er­a­tion.
