The B-21 Ad­vanced Strate­gic Bomber

De­vel­op­ments on the Northrop Grum­man B- 21 Raider ad­vanced strate­gic bomber have pro­gressed af­ter a re­view ini­ti­ated to pro­vide ad­di­tional “in­sight and fidelity into the pro­gramme de­sign since tech­nol­ogy de­vel­op­ment”. Vice Chief of the USAF Gen Stephen Wil­son ob­served that the re­view was con­ducted ear­lier this year. Air Force Global Strike Com­mand (AFGSC) Chief Gen Robin Rand has said that 100 B-21s are the stated re­quire­ment, which fig­ure had been de­cided in spring 2016.

Northrop Grum­man had won the B-21 con­test in Oc­to­ber 2015, beat­ing the ri­val Boe­ing-Lock­heed Martin of­fer. The cur­rent es­ti­mate is that the B-21 will cost around $550m per air­craft and will en­ter op­er­a­tional ser­vice from the mid-2020s.
