IAF to up­grade 90 Mi-17 he­li­copters

So as to en­hance their self-de­fence ca­pa­bil­i­ties, the In­dian Air Force is up­grad­ing some 90 ear­lier vari­ant Mi-17 he­li­copters with Elec­tronic War­fare (EW) sys­tems. Of these medium-lift he­li­copters, 56 Mi-17 and 34 Mi-17 1V, will be up­graded by No.3 Base Re­pair De­pot at Chandigarh in col­lab­o­ra­tion with Bharat Elec­tron­ics Lim­ited (BEL). The new EW suite is equipped with radar warn­ing re­ceiver (RWR), a mis­sile ap­proach warn­ing sys­tem (MAWS) and counter mea­sure dis­pens­ing sys­tem (CMDS). It is ex­pected that the upgra­da­tion task will be com­pleted within 48 months in­clud­ing train­ing an ini­tial batch of pi­lots, flight engi­neers and flight gunners to op­er­ate the new sys­tems.
