Step­ping up!


Cross­ing an­other milestone in In Store Asia 2012 al­ways leaves me with an elated feel­ing of fin­ish­ing a great chap­ter and flip­ping a page to move to the begin­ning of new one. The sheer an­tic­i­pa­tion of what’s in store this year and how it will un­fold in a dy­namic mar­ket like In­dia is ex­cit­ing in it­self. Last is­sue we cov­ered the event of In Store Asia and the cel­e­bra­tion of ex­cel­lence in the com­mu­nity of Re­tail De­sign and Vis­ual Mer­chan­dis­ing in the shar­ing of knowl­edge and suc­cess sto­ries from In­dia and overseas end­ing on a high note in the VMRD Awards. We are, as al­ways, de­lighted to create a plat­form for the con­gre­ga­tion of the re­tail de­sign in­dus­try and play­ing the role of a cat­a­lyst in gath­er­ing and re­port­ing trans­form­ing sto­ries from across the globe that add value and make a dif­fer­ence to our read­ers. This is­sue of VM&RD brings you in­ter­est­ing ideas in de­sign and vis­ual mer­chan­dis­ing in sto­ries and trends from In­dia and the in­ter­na­tional mar­kets. The In­dian sto­ries have a bou­quet of In­dian ethnic store con­cepts like a unique and glam­orous bou­tique for de­signer la­bel Manav Gang­wani , an ur­ban­ized ethnic fash­ion debu­tant called Min­eral and the birth of a new fash­ion­able en­ter­prise called Seven East. In­ter­na­tional in­spi­ra­tions in In­dia are fea­tured in a multi-cui­sine food out­let Leb­mex and cool ca­sual fash­ion brand IZOD from the US. New In­ter­na­tional trends in re­tail de­sign are fea­tured in a techno driven slum­ber so­lu­tion provider store Sleep Num­ber, Worm­land- an arty fash­ion store and the Aura – a su­per glitzy entertainment des­ti­na­tion. Adding eye-catch­ing ideas to the read are re­ports on win­dow dis­plays from Life­style with real cool sum­mer win­dows and un­con­ven­tional ab­stract art win­dows from An­tropolo­gie that use just drip­ping paint to create drama. We also have an in­ter­est­ing and in­for­ma­tive chat with Balaji Natara­jan, Head - Vis­ual Mer­chan­dis­ing, Store De­sign and Brand­ing at Tan­ishq on his jour­ney in the ever chang­ing re­tail in­dus­try of In­dia. Our reg­u­lar colum­nist Surender Gnanao­livu draws at­ten­tion to an up­com­ing trend of pop-up stores and its impact on the Busi­ness of De­sign with some in­no­va­tive adap­ta­tions of this trend from across the world. We have also got new prod­uct launches from Wim Plast and Nitco and News up­dates on new re­tail de­sign and pre­sen­ta­tion projects that have taken shape in the In­dian mar­ket.
