In Ret­ro­spect: 2012

This was a good year for us. While the mar­ket has evolved and ma­tured to a large ex­tent, de­mand­ing cus­tomers have helped us im­prove our of­fer­ing on an on­go­ing ba­sis. Train­ing and di­rect ex­po­sure through vis­its to mul­ti­ple re­tail for­mats were en­cour­aged through­out the year. Our De­sign and Op­er­a­tions teams greatly ben­e­fited from the store vis­its as this brought them closer to un­der­stand­ing the cus­tomer’s needs.

Ar­rival of FDI

While the im­pact of this has yet to be seen in In­dia and the ef­fects could still take some time to be mea­sured, I as­sume the im­pact to the re­tail sup­port in­dus­try can only be pos­i­tive, es­pe­cially when I look at other global ex­am­ples. We are def­i­nitely ex­pect­ing an in­crease in vol­umes and thereby rev­enues. What I ex­pect is that since or­ga­nized in­fra­struc­ture is very im­por­tant to at­tract or­ga­nized cus­tomers, on­go­ing in­vest­ments in this area or M&A's will be­come more com­mon within the in­dus­try. Also, whilst com­pet­ing with global coun­ter­parts will be dif­fi­cult due to their deep pock­ets (de­fined as ' new mar­ket pen­e­tra­tion strat­egy’) it will even­tu­ally be about sur­vival of the fittest!

Look­ing Ahead: 2013

2013 is al­ready look­ing chal­leng­ing and just like in any other in­dus­try, it is very im­por­tant that a com­pany stays very ag­ile to be able to suc­ceed. One must adapt to and change with the ever chang­ing de­mands of the cus­tomer.
