Category : Entertainment Project : PVR Kochi MERIT : Lotus

Giving the feel of walking into a scifi movie, PVR at the Lulu Mall, Kochi creates a dramatic and powerful impact on the customers. For the nine screen multiplex, Lotus design firm was required to create an identity for the Foyer space which houses multiple functions – the box office, entrance lobby, entrances to the auditorium, concessions area and a café. The site for the foyer had major height constraints varying from 7’ to 12’ with linear expanse of 200 ft, making it a very difficult proportion to work with.

The key response to create a single impact was to tie up all the above functions in a singular architectural gesture. A hierarchy of perception was outlined with the key areas being defined as the auditorium entrances, concessions and box office. These areas were drawn up as nodes and a single ribbon modulates through the entire space joining these nodes within the shell. This ribbon flows from the ceiling onto the walls and then onto the flooring, integrating the entire space into one holistic experience. The negative spaces in between the ribbon bands are used as frames to highlight the functions.

Since the ribbon runs along three different surfaces, the materiality could not be maintained throughout. It is finished in stone on the flooring and dado with plaster of Paris finished surfaces flowing over the wall and ceiling. Nevertheless the consistent fluid motion of the ribbon is maintained and it appears to seamlessly wrap the entire space together. The backlit Corian used as a highlighting tool is router cut with a grading pattern to accentuate the auditorium entrances, concession and box office and adds to the magic HVAC, Security, Plumbing, Electrical Consultant
