In­no­va­tion Mat­ters More Than Ever

Re­tail de­sign, more of­ten than not, mir­rors shop­per per­cep­tions and emo­tions. To­day, tech­nol­ogy has per­me­ated all lev­els of re­tail busi­ness, but when it comes to vis­ual mer­chan­dis­ing and re­tail de­sign, in­creas­ingly the ac­cent is on es­tab­lish­ing the emo­tional con­nect with con­sumers rather than just de­liv­er­ing func­tional value. True to this, the In­dian re­tail in­dus­try is adopt­ing the most in­no­va­tive vis­ual mer­chan­dis­ing and re­tail de­sign con­cepts. As the In­dian re­tail land­scape ex­tends its hori­zons and more brands – na­tional and in­ter­na­tional – en­ter the fray, the vis­ual mer­chan­dis­ing and re­tail de­sign fra­ter­nity will be called upon to test new fron­tiers of cre­ativ­ity. Rapid in­crease in the num­ber of malls across met­ros and Tier I & II cities will no doubt place new de­mands on the VMRD fra­ter­nity. In this edi­tion, Susil Dun­gar­wal of Be­yond Squarefeet as­serts that malls have been in­te­grated into our so­cial fab­ric. They have de­vel­oped to be­come com­mu­nity cen­tres rather than just shop­ping hotspots. This will nec­es­sar­ily have a key bear­ing on VMRD ac­tiv­i­ties in the coun­try. Con­sumers to­day are highly con­scious about green prac­tices. In this edi­tion, Natalie Coul­ter, Founder of Belle Fla­neur, brings forth in­ter­est­ing facets of us­ing re­cy­cled ma­te­ri­als for VM. Coul­ter writes that while there will al­ways be people who want to work with and cre­ate some­thing new, she works with ma­te­ri­als that al­ready ex­ist “be­cause it’s most im­por­tant for me to have a so­cial con­science”. Ini­tia­tives like this are truly trend-set­ters for the in­dus­try. This edi­tion also fea­tures col­umns by Amy Meadows of Win­dows Mat­ter, and Mas­simo Fab­bro, Chair­man & Founder of DINN. Meadows shares her thoughts on ‘The Art and Sci­ence of Vis­ual Mer­chan­dis­ing’, drawn from her own rich ex­pe­ri­ence in this in­dus­try, while Fab­bro writes about how dig­i­tal tech­nolo­gies are trans­form­ing shop­ping ex­pe­ri­ences. In­no­va­tion is the name of the game. This edi­tion show­cases a range of in­no­va­tive VM cam­paigns ex­e­cuted in In­dia in re­cent days.
