Innovation Matters More Than Ever
Retail design, more often than not, mirrors shopper perceptions and emotions. Today, technology has permeated all levels of retail business, but when it comes to visual merchandising and retail design, increasingly the accent is on establishing the emotional connect with consumers rather than just delivering functional value. True to this, the Indian retail industry is adopting the most innovative visual merchandising and retail design concepts. As the Indian retail landscape extends its horizons and more brands – national and international – enter the fray, the visual merchandising and retail design fraternity will be called upon to test new frontiers of creativity. Rapid increase in the number of malls across metros and Tier I & II cities will no doubt place new demands on the VMRD fraternity. In this edition, Susil Dungarwal of Beyond Squarefeet asserts that malls have been integrated into our social fabric. They have developed to become community centres rather than just shopping hotspots. This will necessarily have a key bearing on VMRD activities in the country. Consumers today are highly conscious about green practices. In this edition, Natalie Coulter, Founder of Belle Flaneur, brings forth interesting facets of using recycled materials for VM. Coulter writes that while there will always be people who want to work with and create something new, she works with materials that already exist “because it’s most important for me to have a social conscience”. Initiatives like this are truly trend-setters for the industry. This edition also features columns by Amy Meadows of Windows Matter, and Massimo Fabbro, Chairman & Founder of DINN. Meadows shares her thoughts on ‘The Art and Science of Visual Merchandising’, drawn from her own rich experience in this industry, while Fabbro writes about how digital technologies are transforming shopping experiences. Innovation is the name of the game. This edition showcases a range of innovative VM campaigns executed in India in recent days. We also present a few noteworthy international VM initiatives that would be of key interest to our readers. I hope that you will derive great value from this collection of articles and updates.
