Have you always felt that you didn’t have much to do with the depleting environment of the planet? Well look closer, your clothes are the culprit too! Selfridges recently put up a brilliant set of window displays ‘Material World’ that unravel the stories
The clothes we wear, the materials they’re made from and how they are manufactured have human and environmental consequences. There are no easy answers when it comes to fashion and sustainability but Selfridges recently celebrated eight bright young designers who are using materials like plastic, leather, cotton and wool in brilliant, surprising and stylish ways.
“We are a shop selling “stuff”, so let’s take a closer look at the very materiality that makes it. Material World will examine sustainable textile development, with a focus on social, local and global production stories.The project will explore current problems and their impact
as well as presenting solutions and ideas, with honesty and humour, in a retail environment. Through Material World we wanted to invite consumers and the industry to refashion the way we think about our clothes, and how we talk about sustainability,” says Linda Hewson, Selfridges creative director. Buying Better, Inspiring Change is an ongoing, store-wide sustainability programme that empowers our buyers to encourage best practice and to drive improvements in responsible, ethical retail practice. During MATERIAL WORLD, Selfridges engaged with established brands to tell their material stories and position provenance and production at the forefront of fashion retail.
