Starting his journey as a young teenage rebel, Sunil Suresh, CEO & Founder of Stanley, ran away to Mumbai from his home town Bangalore and worked near Gateway of India, selling small leather products to the wealthy folks who stayed and visited the famous Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. His later job as a production manager in a leather garment company gave him tremendous exposure to the world of leather, fashion and luxury. Having worked with many European iconic brands, he understood how these global luxury brands used the traditional skills and craftsmanship of Indian artisans to produce some of the finest articles sold in the luxury markets across the world.
Sunil’s passion for leather and his desire to create a world class Indian company took shape when he started Stanley Automotive seating as a garage start up with three fine craftsman and a small capital of three lakh rupees.Today Stanley employs over 600 of the finest artisans from across India to produce some of the finest leather articles in the world, which can be proudly called “HAND MADE IN INDIA.” Besides, there presence through a chain of furniture boutiques across India, the company recently launched Global Living Emporio, India’s largest international décor mall conceptualised and curated by Shubha Sunil and Sunil Suresh - the founders of Stanley Lifestyles Ltd. VM&RD chatted up with the couple on the brand’s new store, its retail expansion plan and more. Edited excerpts.
You recently unveiled the new retail format Global Living Emporio. Can you tell us a bit about the market potential for the luxury home decor segment. What is the plan to take this format to other regions of the country.
Global Living Emporio has been opened to cater to the demands of architects, designers and high end home makers. Representing 60 Indian and international brands, while showcasing over 150 room setting in its 1,00,000 sft facility provides the complete choice under one roof. We plan to open one each in Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad in the coming years based on the success of the Bangalore store.
With the store design done by in-house team, what was the overall concept to suit the various brands it houses?
The idea was simple. It had to highlight what we intend to sell and not decorate the ambience and distract the clients.
