Love For Pen & Ink
Born in 1985 in Raipur - Chhatisgarh, Ashu Gupta went on to become a qualified interior designer from NFID, but soon her hobby and passion for art made her pursue it as a full-time profession since 2010. Earlier this year, she made the headlines for her debut solo show ‘The Circle of Life’ exhibited at Sublime Galleria, UB City, comprising of a collection created by pen and ink as a medium.“Even while working as an interior designer, I was always pulled towards creating walls that added character to spaces. I even worked on some paintings, murals and painted doors for a couple of projects back then,” Ashu Gupta says while explaining her journey towards the arts.
Having learnt from renowned artists like MG Doddamani, Ashu’s work has been shortlisted by the prestigious Lalit Kala Akademi for 2016-17. Exhibiting her work at India Art Show 2016 in Mumbai, this 31 year old artist has worked with many mediums such as oil, acrylic and water colours among other in the past. Ashu is currently exploring the pen and ink medium in her artworks, after discovering her passion towards creating these unique two-tone paintings.
“After I had my baby, I found it difficult to dedicate time and space for other mediums. Through pen and ink, I was able to create my paintings without much hassle. That’s when I fell in love with this medium,” shares Ashu. While she majorly uses pen and ink, sometimes she also incorporates acrylic and water colour to fuse with it. Ashu ads that this artwork can be done on any mediums. such as wood, paper, wall etc.
Working for over a year on her latest collection comprising of 20 artworks ranging from 1’x 1’ to larger ones at 3’x 4’, The Circle of Life, represents multiple philosophies of life, and her journey as an artist. “My artwork takes lot of time being very intricate, for instance at times when I do scribbling its takes a month for 2’/2’ and if its the same work with circles it takes couple of months,” Ashu explains.
