The Art of Hu­man­iz­ing re­tail

De­spite the on­set of the age of dig­i­tal in­ter­face, the need for en­gag­ing phys­i­cal spa­ces are grow­ing in par­al­lel. The crav­ing for the hu­man touch, ‘hu­man­iza­tion, is seen in re­tail de­sign more than ever be­fore. Phys­i­cal foot­prints of stores are rapidly in­creas­ing across cat­e­gories and re­tail de­sign is be­ing used to cre­ate in­spir­ing real-life ex­pe­ri­ences and im­pact brand pref­er­ence and loy­alty pos­i­tively.

The cover story fea­tures an In­dian brand, Asma from New Delhi, which show­case an in­spir­ing en­vi­ron­ment that used In­dian art and cul­ture to present a de­light­ful ‘hu­man­ized’ store ex­pe­ri­ence. The Cat­e­gory Spe­cial sec­tion fo­cusses on Footwear and re­veals a lot of in­sights on the growth of this cat­e­gory which es­ti­mates a stag­ger­ing 800 phys­i­cal stores added by just a few of the main play­ers!

The or­ganic pro­duce con­cept is a strong tes­ti­mony for the re­spect for the nat­u­ral. The In­dian De­sign sec­tion fea­tures the I Say Or­ganic store which fea­tures or­ganic pro­duce in an in­spir­ing en­vi­ron­ment that cel­e­brate this ethos of well­be­ing. The Story Teller Bar shows how the very so­cial art of story-telling is used to cre­ate an in­spir­ing and dif­fer­en­ti­ated leisure en­vi­ron­ment.

The Vis­ual Mer­chan­dis­ing sec­tion fea­tures the ur­ban story telling art of Pop Art used in a win­dow dis­play, again re­it­er­at­ing the ap­pre­ci­a­tion of hu­man­iza­tion in re­tail de­sign and pre­sen­ta­tion. The De­sign In­spi­ra­tion sec­tion fea­tures the artis­tic duo of Unedi­tioned Art who trans­form spa­ces through hand paint­ing and wall tat­toos.

The Ma­te­rial Mat­ters and New Ma­te­ri­als sec­tion fea­tures in­ter­est­ing tac­tile ma­te­ri­als and sur­face fin­ishes that can be used in re­tail en­vi­ron­ments to cre­ate in­spir­ing spa­tial ex­pe­ri­ences in store en­vi­ron­ments.
