The ear­li­est recorded his­tor­i­cal sources claim that the city was named af­ter the Me­laka tree (In­dian goose­berry or amala) un­der which the fugi­tive ruler Paramesh­wara was rest­ing when he de­cided that this site was per­fect for estab­lish­ing a new king­dom.

Other leg­ends at­tribute the found­ing of Malacca to a Hindu prince flee­ing from nearby Java.

The church of St. Fran­cis Xavier built in 1848.
