Beware of fake universities, students!

In what seems like an adulteration of our education system, "fake" universities are mushrooming in Delhi. The University Grants Commission recently came up with a list of fraudulent universities and what has unnerved all is the fact that six of them are in the national capital.

The UGC lacks the authority to close down such fake universities that are operating without its recognition. In some cases the "fake" universities shut down themselves after failing to get certification from the top education body, but in many cases they are still operational, jeopardizing the academic interests of thousands of gullible students from across the country.

Among these six "fake" universities is the Vishwakarma Open University for Self-employment. This university does not even have a premises to operate from. It operates from a small office in

Mubarka Chowk in North Delhi and claims to have 80 institutes in different states of India affiliated under it. Despite not being recognised by the UGC, this university runs as many as 81 diploma courses, several certificate courses and one, two or three-year degree courses.

The university's courses include human resource management, computer applications, taxation and investment banking. What is worrisome is that the university is getting such a good response from students everywhere, who are most likely ignorant of the status of the university, that is does not even bother to work towards securing a UGC approval.

Vijay Singh Mahajan, the director of VOUSE, in fact blamed the non-recognition of the university on political reasons, saying they do not have the political support that is required to avail recognition.

Adr-centric Juridical University is yet another university that is non-listed with the UGC. The university says in its website that it is situated in Gopala Tower in West Delhi's Rajendra Place but you would not find it there. The eighth floor of the tower, from where the university claims to be operational from, actually houses a plant protection consultancy.

United Nations University, Vocational University and Indian Institution of Science and Engineering are the other three fake universities operating from Delhi. The sixth fake university is Commercial University, which claims to be located in Daryaganj. But when you actually visit the said address, you would find the nameplate of Institute of Business Administration and Management (IBAM) there. But people should know that the institute downed shutters four years ago.

Of all the 25 "fake" universities, nine are in Uttar Pardesh and remaining 10 in other states.
