East meets West at Rock Paper Scissors, a playful Japanese restaurant whipping up contemporary Japanese food with influences

from fine Western dining.

Ensconced in the culinary hotbed of Mega Kuningan, the newly opened modern Japanese bistro occupies a light airy space on the ground floor of The East building. The indoor dining area is elegantly furnished with handsome light maple wood chairs and tables, cushy designer dining chairs and cream-coloured booth sofas. Firsttime guests will be pleasantly surprised by the bar area at Rock Paper Scissors. The eclectically contemporary space is furnished with playfully designed liquor racks, dapper zen bar stools, vast stretches of lush vertical green walls and swanky chandeliers that branch overhead and cast a warm orange glow over the bar area.

Visitors to Rock Paper Scissors can enjoy meticulously prepared Japanese culinary creations prepared by Executive Chef Cla Lisca, graduate of the prestigious Nagoya Culinary School. Incorporating impeccable Western fine-dining techniques and conscientiously sourced ingredients into Japanese food, Chef Cla Lisca offers up refined and contemporary Yoshoku dishes. Guests looking for something hearty are urged to order the crowd-favourite Striploin & Truffle Don – a bed of fragrant truffle rice accompanied by generous lightly charred tender slices of striploin steak finished off with a perfectly cooked onsen egg. The Umeboshi Poke Taco is sure to delight diners who are health-conscious – a brightly coloured medley of verdant salad greens, creamy chunks of avocado and delectable cubes of fresh fatty tuna with a garnish of kewpie mayo, all encased in soft toasted pita wraps.

Caffeine addicts will be charmed by the unique blend specifically crafted for the restaurant by Jakarta’s coffee powerhouse Common Grounds Roastery’s owner, Yoshua Tanu. Best enjoyed as a cappuccino or a cafe latte, the heady Indonesian-Brazil blend tasting notes include dark chocolate, caramel and toffee.

A separate smoking area for dining is also available in the glass-enclosed courtyard, where guests can kick back and relax while taking in the lush surroundings through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Guests looking for a straight drink can grab a bar stool, talk to one of Rock Paper Scissor’s friendly mixologists and choose from the comprehensive range of wines and spirits from the well-stocked bar.

Visitors are encouraged to order the various exotic libations concocted by acclaimed Singaporean mixologist Nick Lim who worked in famous Singaporean bars Jekyll and Hyde, Attica and Nektar. Coming from a chef’s background, Nick is known for challenging discerning cocktail aficionados with his adventurous creations, such as Mr Bean, a silky smooth and delicious soya beancurd based cocktail or the Common Man cocktail – a decadently potent blend of butterwash whisky, rich chocolatey coffee with a finish of fresh coconut milk.
