Harper's Bazaar Art (Indonesia) - - What’s On Baj -

“I will ask the spectators to create their own version of long life, which depends on their personal perception, memory, information and hope towards living a long life.” That was what Fransisca Retno explained when asked about what she would perform in the coming BAJ 2016.

With the title Laboratorium Panjang Umur (Long Life Laboratory), this performance can be considered as a development of what Fransisca had peformed in the Exi(s)t #4 exhibition program some years ago. Beginning from her own personal experience interacting intensely with Jamu (Indonesia traditional herbal medicines), Fransisca developed an art performance tried to interpret human’s desire to always a long and healthy life. A quite humane dream but also vulnerable to capital commodification, it is as how the artists feel, witnessing so many sophistication of technology labels attached to health products and consumed by urban society. In her upcoming performance, Fransisca will act as the host who welcomes her performance connoisseurs to ‘visit’ the table with many jamu ingredients and the equipment to prepare the medicines. During her performance Fransisca will invite all her guests to discuss and prepare the herbs according to their personal preference until finally they will fill up the recipe book, while of course rethink about the meaning of long life and the best way to achieve the truest life vitality.n
