USUALLY HELD just once every hundred years, the Eka Dasa Rudra, which translates

as the eleven forms of Rudra - a powerful demon - is an islandwide cleansing ceremony that culminates in a series of animal sacrifices at Pura Besakih on the slopes of Gunung Agung. A miscalculation in the timing of the ceremony in 1963 is believed to have led to the major eruption of that year, which just goes to show that Rudra is not to be

messed with.
