AT THE CAT­A­CLYSMIC end of Bali’s re­sis­tance to for­eign dom­i­na­tion were the rit­ual mass sui­cides of South Bali’s royal fam­i­lies and their ret­inues: first at Badung in what is now Den­pasar ahead of the rapidly ad­vanc­ing Dutch ex­pe­di­tionary forces in 1906, then at Klungkung in 1908. The much ear­lier de­feat of the north coast king­dom of Bule­leng by the Dutch in 1849 had sim­i­larly re­sulted in a puputan.
