In the first instalment of a new watches column, for which a range of aficionados will write on subjects close to their hearts, Hong Kong watch collector Winston Koo highlights an important charity event and unique opportunity for collectors
Since its inception in 2005, Only Watch has become the premier international watchmaking charity event, raising funds for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare genetic disease that cruelly strikes down children and young adults. Watchmakers donate strictly one-off pieces, or the first piece in a series, for auction at the biennial event, which takes place in Geneva on November 11. The 49 timepieces donated for this year’s auction represent a crosssection of the industry’s style and innovation, and I believe the following eight examples will garner the keenest bidding. The buyers will be helping make the world a better place as they add remarkable timepieces to their collections. Christie’s will be conducting the auction for the first time, and prior to the event will be bringing the watches to key Asian cities for viewing. Stops include Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei.
