THE PALACE OF GOD­DESS ANJANI

The moun­tain is thought to be the palace of God­dess Anjani, the queen of Rin­jani’s spir­i­tual world. She is en­throned on the high­est point of the is­land, at 3,726 me­tres above sea level. The lo­cals be­lieve Anjani was born from the Sasak peo­ple – the in­dige­nous tribe of Lom­bok. Ac­cord­ing to leg­end, she is the off­spring of King Sala­parang. Peo­ple in Lom­bok praise and hon­our the spir­its by hold­ing an an­nual rit­ual on the slopes of the moun­tain and by Se­gara Anak Lake. There are many at­trac­tive ar­eas as­so­ci­ated with the God­dess Anjani. One ex­am­ple is the Be­nang Ke­lambu
