Ten beauty minutes with Ryan Ogilvy

We all love and admire beautiful celebrities as we stalk them on social media or watch them on television– but do you know the professionals responsible for their glow up? Ryan Ogilvy, Maybelline New York’s official makeup artist in Indonesia, is one of those professionals–and for good reason: His signature soft-and-natural looks enhance the best of your features without turning you into a clown. The look–basically pink-toned lips and flawless skin–is clearly catching on, as Ryan counts celebrities such Chelsea Islan, Nagita Slavina and Pevita Pearce among his clients.

J+ talked with Ryan about his passion for makeupand some tips you need to know.

When did you get into the business?

I have been living my passion as a makeup artist since 2005. I loved looking at the covers of women’s magazines and also at beauty advertisements on TV. So, after I graduated with a major in public relations at Interstudi [design polytechnic in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta], I continued my studies to pursue a career by taking a makeup class.

What do you like most about beauty?

I like everything about makeup: The techniques, the facial features, facial types, makeup items and products. Another thing I love about this profession is that I can help women to feel beautiful and confident. There is this satisfaction that is priceless once your work gives meaning to people’s lives. As the official makeup artist for Maybelline Indonesia, I am honored to be given this opportunity to create a look which inspires young Indonesian women to be more confident and “make it happen”. Just like Maybelline, I also believe in the power of transformation through makeup. It can enhance a woman’s beauty, and when she feels beautiful, she can make it happen.

What’s in your make-up bag?

In my beauty case, I have tons of makeup, from bases to decorative makeup products. The most important thing is to have the right and perfect complexion base. I always use [Maybelline’s] Super BB Cushion on my clients. It gives you a natural pore-less flawless finish. Lipstick and mascara are also important makeup products. I always bring and use Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick and Magnum Barbie mascara for my clients.

What are your personal faves?

Maybelline White Superfresh Liquid Powder and Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick. Powder to perfect the complexion and lipstick to spice up the look. Lipstick has the ability to change someone’s mood quickly–that is why it’s important to always explore and try new colors.

How important is prep before putting on makeup?

It’s important to keep the client’s face clean before putting any makeup on. Usually, I use toner for cleansing and then moisturizer and primer to create a perfect canvas for the makeup.

What is your signature look?

Natural, fresh and flawless beauty. I really love light makeup, without changing the character and beauty of a woman’s face. I am all about bringing out or enhancing one’s true inner beauty. This is why Maybelline and I created the “Doll It Up” look, which brings out a woman’s natural features, but elegantly.

Any products that celebrity clients always want to take home?

Almost all of my clients ask for lipsticks. They all love lipstick. Don’t we all? Lipsticks in various colors and textures are a powerful tool to transform someone’s look instantly. One of my client’s favorites is Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick. It has 10 different shades that can transform your look.

Any makeup artists you look up to?

My guru is Ania Milczarczyk. She’s a makeup artist from Sydney. She is famous for her light but sophisticated looks. I adore her and have learned so much from her.

How do you take care of your own skin?

I clean my face with the right face soap and also toner on daily basis. My skin tends to be sensitive, so once a month, I visit a beauty clinic for a skin treatment and to give my face some relaxation.

Makeup tips that every woman should follow?

It is important to start with a clean face and use moisturizer before applying makeup to your face. Every woman needs to know their makeup character and what makeup look fits them well. Do not put on too much makeup.

Choose the right complexion or powder that matches your skin tone. A mismatch between your face and your neck is very unacceptable. At the end of the day, all you want is a boost of confidence to make your dream happen!
