BANTEN: Airport officials foiled the smuggling of dozens of animals in four large suitcases at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Wednesday.

The four suitcases belonged to a Saudi Arabian citizen, AA. The suitcases contained a number of protected animals.

“There were 65 turtles, nine snakes, five lizards, ten crocodiles, four weasels and eight leeches. Two of the turtles and three weasels were found dead,” said Eliza Suryati Roesli, head of the Agricultural Quarantine Center at the airport, as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.

“At the departure gate, an aviation security officer became suspicious of the suitcase carried by AA. When examined, there were some animals wrapped in plastic,” Eliza said.
