More drug suspects shot dead
MEDAN: Two drug suspects were shot dead by police at two separate locations in North Sumatra on Wednesday.
Husni from East Binjai was shot dead in Besitang, Langkat regency. The police claimed he retaliated when arrested.
Jefri Syahputera aka Vijay from Teluk Nibung, Tanjung Balai, meanwhile, was shot while undergoing arrest in Tanjung Balai. North Sumatra Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Rina Sari Ginting said the police had seized 3 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine from each suspect.
“They were from an international network. We are still pursuing other members of the syndicate,” she told The Jakarta Post.
Lead narcotics investigator Sr. Adj. Comr. Hilman Wijaya said the suspects were arrested while allegedly transporting crystal meth from Aceh to Medan. “We fired warning shots but they attempted to steal officers’ guns,” he said.
At least 20 drug suspects have been shot dead by the police this year in the province. The figure is arguably the highest among all 34 provinces.
Human rights groups have voiced concerns over the aggressive war on drugs that could lead to extrajudicial killing by police officers.
