Police beef up security in Tolikara
JAYAPURA: Jayapura Police have heightened security ahead of the inauguration of the elected regent of Tolikara regency, Papua, amid protests from losing camps opposing the election result.
The elected regent and deputy regent Usman G. Wanimbo and Dinus Wanimbo, along with Yapen Islands regent Tony Tesar and Frans Sanadi will be inaugurated by Papua Governor Lukas Enembe, representing the Home Affairs Minister, in Jayapura on Monday.
“Papua Police will prepare security measures for the Tolikara and Yapen regents inauguration held at the Governor’s office on Monday, so that there will not be any security disturbances during or after the inauguration,” Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. AM Kamala said on Friday.
Papua Police will also deploy two groups of the Mobile Brigade consisting around 200 personnel to Tolikara to prevent any violent protests during the inauguration.
Police decided to add security measures following attacks by several people on the Home Affairs Ministry office on Wednesday protesting the Tolikara election. They threw rocks at the Ministry’s buildings causing damage to the facilities and nearby vehicles. — JP
