Po­lice beef up se­cu­rity in To­likara

JAYAPURA: Jayapura Po­lice have height­ened se­cu­rity ahead of the in­au­gu­ra­tion of the elected re­gent of To­likara re­gency, Pa­pua, amid protests from los­ing camps op­pos­ing the elec­tion re­sult.

The elected re­gent and deputy re­gent Us­man G. Wan­imbo and Di­nus Wan­imbo, along with Yapen Is­lands re­gent Tony Te­sar and Frans Sanadi will be in­au­gu­rated by Pa­pua Gover­nor Lukas Enembe, rep­re­sent­ing the Home Af­fairs Min­is­ter, in Jayapura on Mon­day.

“Pa­pua Po­lice will pre­pare se­cu­rity mea­sures for the To­likara and Yapen re­gents in­au­gu­ra­tion held at the Gover­nor’s of­fice on Mon­day, so that there will not be any se­cu­rity dis­tur­bances dur­ing or af­ter the in­au­gu­ra­tion,” Pa­pua Po­lice spokesman Sr. Comr. AM Ka­mala said on Fri­day.

Pa­pua Po­lice will also de­ploy two groups of the Mo­bile Brigade con­sist­ing around 200 per­son­nel to To­likara to pre­vent any vi­o­lent protests dur­ing the in­au­gu­ra­tion.

Po­lice de­cided to add se­cu­rity mea­sures fol­low­ing at­tacks by sev­eral peo­ple on the Home Af­fairs Min­istry of­fice on Wed­nes­day protest­ing the To­likara elec­tion. They threw rocks at the Min­istry’s build­ings caus­ing dam­age to the fa­cil­i­ties and nearby ve­hi­cles. — JP
