Dusit D2 Chiang Mai

Business Traveller - - TRIED AND TESTED THAILAND HOTELS - Tom Otley

BACKGROUND Part of Dusit hotels, the D2 brand offers modern and functional accommodation. In this case, there is a large gym, swimming pool, Devarana spa, bar and restaurant.

W H AT ’ S ITLIKE? It is one of cluster of newer high-rise buildings outside the Old City – look up wherever you are during the day and you’ll see the Dusit D2. The lobby is light and air-conditioned. Service throughout is excellent.

WHERE IS IT? Just off the Chang Klan Road in the city centre, a 45-minute taxi ride from the airport. It’s a two-minute walk from the city’s vibrant Night Bazaar and a 15-minute walk to the Old Town.

ROOMS The 131 rooms are of a good size, with entry-level Deluxe rooms and Club Deluxe 32 sqm, while Studio Suites boast 64 sqm and the D Suite 128 sqm. The style is contemporary, with low-backed corner sofas, large hanging lights and open-plan bathrooms (with optional sliding doors). Our Studio Suite had a roomy sitting area with a sofa, easy chair and coffee table. The large bedroom with king-size bed had a flatscreen TV and sliding doors to a goodsized bathroom with a large shower and separate bath. There was ample hanging and drawer space in the dressing room. While the emphasis is on the functional rather than the luxurious, little touches ensure it doesn’t feel soulless. There is free wifi in every room.

FOODANDDRINK Café Sol, the restaurant, was bustling at breakfast, with an extensive buffet of Western and Asian choices on offer. However, it was largely deserted in the evenings – no surprise given the hotel’s proximity to hundreds of inexpensive restaurants and the excellent Night Bazaar. The lobby bar, Mix, shows

sport on a large pull-down screen in the evenings, but despite amiable staff, it’s not the sort of place people linger due to an array of bars on the doorstep. More appealing is the Club Lounge on the seventh floor, but you need to pay the upgrade for a Club room for that.

MEETINGS Rooms are on the lower lobby floor, with the largest capable of hosting 100 for a banquet.

LEISURE There is an outdoor pool with loungers, parasols and bar on the mezzanine floor. It’s a small-but-welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of Chang Mai’s streets. On the tenth floor is a wellkitted-out gym, which can get busy at peak times. The Devarana spa offers massages and other treatments.

VERDICT A great choice, with all the facilities you need. Good sound-proofing ensures that, though you are in the thick of things, you aren’t disturbed.
