New Road Hotel, London
WHAT’S IT LIKE? This Whitechapel hotel opened in May 2018. The former factory’s brick façade is covered with floor-to-ceiling windows, offering views inside and flooding the industrial-chic open-plan interior with light.
ROOMS There are 80 rooms (12 sqm to 35 sqm) over three floors. My Warehouse T twin room (20 sqm) was kitted out in the hotel’s uniform of parquet floors, unconcealed fixtures and fittings and metal pendant lights.
Instead of a wardrobe there was hanging space beside a vanity-cum-work desk and on hooks by the door. Vending machines provide free tea and coffee on each floor.
All rooms have a 49-inch flatscreen smart TV and comfortable Hypnos bed. The large en suite wet room/toilet had a powerful shower with a seat and top-notch toiletries.
FOOD AND DRINK There is a bar area near the front of the ground floor, while the restaurant, Mr White’s English Chophouse, is towards the rear. Service was exemplary, and the meaty menu enjoyable, though some dishes were slightly lacklustre. A full breakfast menu is served or you can opt for cereal in all its guises in the Cereal Grind café.
MEETINGS Alongside the communal spaces are two meeting rooms seating up to eight each. The spaces can be joined to house up to 25 in a theatre set-up.
LEISURE There is a pool table on the first floor and space for private fitness classes on the top floor. The hotel is also creating a range of experiences, such as graffiti tours.
VERDICT This is a refreshing addition to the London hotel scene in a great location for business and culture. It’s young, fun and well designed, with communal spaces that make working a pleasure.
