Colt Technology Services has announced plans to revamp its fibre network infrastructure in Japan, enabling highspeed bandwidth up to 100Gbps on a mass scale.

The phased expansion, which will also include an extensive Layer 2 network expansion, is set to begin in January 2017.

It will see Colt’s leased line service in the country providing speeds between 10Gbps and 100G in metro area networks. It will also add multi-route diversity for protected connectivity between Tokyo and Osaka.

Colt has also announced plans to increase its number of points of presence by 50%, including both data centres and other nodes. It has begun constructing its second data centre in Tokyo, which is scheduled to open before the end of 2017.

The second part of the expansion, set to launch in Q2 2017, will see Colt increase etherxen service areas which offer speeds up to 10Gbps. It will also expand backbone capacity up to 100Gbps with high bandwidth services.

In a statement, Colt said: “Cloud service providers, financial organisations, content distributors, and even ISPS all increasingly require backbone networks with greater reliability, higher capacity, and speeds greater than 10Gbps.

“Furthermore, recent years have seen a drop in high-bandwidth costs, as well as business-wide adoption of highbandwidth networks. Colt is moving swiftly with their revamp in order to provide immediate response to the predicted increase in network traffic and subsequent market-generated demand.”
