Zayo and Flexconnect

Carrier Ethernet is a more important technology than ever for network operators looking for the most flexible and best value platform to base next generation services on. Ethernet’s role in, for example, developing the cloud ecosystem was underlined this year with the launch of Flexconnect by US and European carrier Zayo.

Flexconnect is a usage-based Layer 2 Ethernet service that connects data centres with cloud service providers like AWS and Microsoft Azure. At present it links more than 200 data centres with cloud and software-as-a-service providers, and in lieu of a flat fee instead bases charges just on the data that is transported. This enables businesses with fluctuating connectivity needs to take charge of their connectivity costs and never pay more than they need.

Typically, infrastructure as a service offerings allow businesses to pay only for the resources they use. Cloud connectivity, on the other hand, generally requires a fixed contract with fixed fees. Zayo is changing that model, allowing for the purchase of 500Mbps to 100Gbps on Tranzact, the carrier’s online selfservice platform. The Tranzact customer portal means customers can order connections in as little as two minutes. Once established, the full port speed is available for the customer’s use until the service is stopped. The customer gets the benefit of having a port at the ready, paying only for bits used. Customers can compare prices, purchase services, track orders, view their bandwidth usage and invoices.

Customers also benefit from the reach of the company’s metro and intercity fibre footprint with dedicated, highperformance connectivity. Zayo has an 8.4 million fibre-mile network offering carrier grade connectivity across North America and Europe and 59 of its own data centres providing excellent colocation space. Zayo’s list of services and products have grown through acquisition, helping to develop its cloud offering and broaden its European network. It has also organically expanded its portfolio with the addition of DDOS mitigation services.
