YACHT builder Lurssen has revealed Azzam, a 180-metre motor yacht that steals the title of the world’s largest from billionaire Roman Abramovich’s yacht Eclipse. Amongst other features, Azzam – which means ‘dedication’ in Arabic – has an 18x29-metre pillar-free salon and is capable of travelling at speeds of up to 30 knots thanks to a combination of gas turbines and diesel engines that produce a total of 94,000 horsepower. The enormous yacht was built in three years, following a one-year engineering and planning phase. It is believed to have cost more than US $620 million to build. According to Lurssen, the owner’s brief was to “build a large luxury yacht with an i nnovative and timeless design that would be able to travel at high speed in warm and shallow waters, whilst providing luxurious and sophisticated accommodation to its guests.” Lurssen has remained tight-lipped about the identity of the yacht’s owner, but credits Eng. Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi, chairman of the UAE Department of President’s Affairs, as the creative brains behind the project. Some of the world’s top companies collaborated to create Azzam, with exterior designs by Nauta Yachts, i nteriors by Christophe Leoni, and technical engineering by Burgess.
