FIT FOR A KING
W Hotel St Petersburg Tel: +7 812 610 6161 www.wstpetersburg.com St. Petersburg has become a favourite playground of Russia’s rich, who come not only for the culture and history, but also for the urbane sophistication of its hotels and restaurants. They find a nice balance at the W Hotel St. Petersburg ( left), which is ideally placed in the historical heart of the city, somewhere between St Isaac’s and the Winter Palace. The Antonio Citterio designed decor fuses old-world elegance with avant grade gestures, like glitter-balls and diamond-cut lacquered doors. Meanwhile, there’s more fusion at its flagship restaurant Mix In St Petersburg by French master-chef Alain Ducasse, where Mediterranean-inspired recipes draw on Russian ingredients, like king crab from the Kamchatka Peninsula. Style and service are essential facets of the W’s appeal, but what it’s really all about is comfort. After a hard day’s sightseeing in a city with too many things to see, I’m glad to get back to a room where the bed is huge and fresh, the carpets rich underfoot, and the shower as reinvigorating as a rainforest downpour.
