Destinations of the World News
CONTRIBUTORS
Sarah Freeman
On the road with no official abode, British-born Sarah’s zeal for adventure and off-the-grid destinations has taken her to some pretty far-flung places. In the course of her recent assignments she has travelled to some of the best swells on the planet in Sumatra’s remote Mentawai islands, and locked eyes with mountain gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The photojournalist also harbours a lifelong interest in wine, which she indulges on a recent trip to Germany’s famous Rhine Valley on page 82. “It’s believed that monks in the Rheingau region were cultivating wine varieties in these vineyards as far back as 1392,” she says. @setfreesarah
Andy Marshall
Born in England, Andy has been a professional freelance travel writer and photographer since 1990, and has travelled to over 60 countries including Sri Lanka, Panama, Morocco and the Solomon Islands to cover a diverse range of travel, food, drinks and golf features for various publications worldwide including Golf Australia, Geographic Magazine and Blue Wings. “From playing golf in Iceland and visiting rum shops in Barbados, to truffle hunting in Italy and sampling the best diners in New York, I have scoured the globe looking for interesting story angles,” he says. For this issue, Andy shared his favourites among Europe’s most challenging and scenic holes (page 50).
Becca Hensley
Jet-setting, award-winning travel writer Becca calls Austin home, though she’s rarely there. She makes her pop-up offices in the world’s best hotels on a regular basis, as she did for this story, where she typed away at Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como (page 60). With stories in magazines as diverse as National Geographic Traveler, Elite Traveler, Bridal Guide and South
China News, she has a fondness for fashion and art, and highly recommends the bangles at Saraceno in Bellagio. “Besides careening through the water on a fast boat, my favourite way to enjoy Lake Como is taking the afternoon
passeggiata with locals – slowly walking through the tiny villages, window shopping, and laughing with friends,” she says. @beccahensley
Christine Hinz
A writer who covers travel, the arts, and expat life, Christine spent a majority of her life living on the island of Manhattan, and now calls the island of Abu Dhabi her home. Exploring island life has been a personal calling since the age of seven when she stepped onto the tarmac on St. John, USVI. Upon hearing steel drums for the first time she gave her first travel review, stating, “I think I’m going to like this place.” This month, she heads to Furaveri Island Resort & Spa (page 68) where she uncovers the charms of a luxurious, authentic Maldivian getaway in one of the country’s most untouched atolls. @screamingabdhab
