Our sec­tor has taken a turn in the last few months. Oil prices re­main in a slump and the lat­est fig­ures of work­ing oil rigs in­di­cate a down­ward curve. There­fore, ex­plo­ration and pro­duc­tion com­pa­nies will likely be fac­ing some tough calls in 2015, in terms of max­imis­ing pro­duc­tiv­ity and prof­itabil­ity, amid ex­pected cuts in re­source ex­pen­di­ture. It’s not long ago that the world dealt with sim­i­lar hits. See the fea­ture on page 20, where Ju­lian Pick­er­ing of Ge­ologix harks back to a sim­i­lar sit­u­a­tion in 2008. But we have come a long way since then in terms of tech­nol­ogy. In this edi­tion we take a look at how to smarten up the E& P data flow. There are sev­eral el­e­ments to con­sider for get­ting this kind of in­for­ma­tion work­ing harder ( and more cost ef­fec­tively) along the pipe­line. For ex­am­ple, while real- time data trans­fer can pro­vide valu­able in­sights and pro­duc­tion up­dates, could that band­width be utilised more ef­fi­ciently? For those plan­ning, cur­rently im­ple­ment­ing, or up­grad­ing a dig­i­tal oil­field, per­haps you will find some ideas about greas­ing your net­works in this is­sue.
