WATCH PLATFORM : QUILL & PAD
Is there a place for old-school journalism among the lightning-fast pace of today’s Internet? Ian Skellern and Elizabeth Doerr who is a longstanding contributor to Plaza Watch think so. And to prove their point, the two horologically specialised professional journalists based in central Europe, with combined experience in the industry approaching 40 years, have founded Quill & Pad. This clean, easy-to-use, clearly designed website, which went live on January 1, 2014, is now home to the stories, photography, and colourful elements of the haute horlogerie end of the watchmaking world – as seen through their eyes. Though the casual enthusiast is certain to find stories, photography and video concerning brands they know and love, he or she is also sure of learning a number of new things and discover artists they have never heard of. Enhancing the experience is a specialised glossary to explain some of the more technical terms used.
This joint venture, whose framework focuses on simple efficiency while offering a visual feast, sees the pair not only drawing on their personal experiences, but also introducing insightful new figures to the scene. Currently there are two standing contributors, each with distinct personalities coming from different ends of the horological spectrum. Engineer Joshua Munchow from Atlanta, GA, USA is the resident ‘nerdwriter,’ from whose technical mind new ‘wordinations’ and interesting analogies spring. GaryG, on the other hand, writes insightfully about his experiences as an avid collector of unique, highend timepieces. Both offer interesting viewpoints and technical virtuosity.
