BÉDAT & CO. THE 828
Swiss pioneers in women’s timepieces, Bédat & Co. was founded by Madame Simone Bédat in 1996. The brand excels in creating a dynamic synergy of diamond and steel and their latest mechanical automatic model, the 828, with an ETA Calibre 111/2 289A2, is iconic for its 151 diamond encrusted bezel that is ordained by a seductive crown guard adorned in yet more diamonds. It has a 36.5mm diameter stainless steel case and a 42-hour power reserve and the design language is sharp and clean, with thick Roman numerals. The cool, chic silvery steel and the peppering of petite quality diamonds, help to illuminate the brand’s logo of the conjoined double Bs – being representative of the number 8, which symbolises several philosophical meanings, including prosperity and perfection. This subtle weaving of the brand’s identity in the dial is a reflection of how typically feminine traits of delicacy and sophistication are at the heart of Bédat’s values. Adding to these qualities is one of several available straps or bracelets – the hand sewn alligator strap, which helps brings a stronger element to the design that otherwise is exquisitely soft in its shadow of the shimmering diamonds and steel. The practical difficulty of embedding diamonds into steel as opposed to the usual gold or other precious metals is indicative of Bédat’s drive to create uniquely bold feminine watches; it represents a certain strength and independence from the usual mainstream craftsmanship. The 828, as you can imagine, does not shy away from being traditionally classic in design, yet, this to some women may seem out of touch with the modern female and could be one of its greatest hindrances. This could be overcome though by choosing the black alligator strap and thus having a healthy balance of a beautifully aesthetic dial with a robust and sturdier leather strap.
