The Plaza Watch panel of experts pick out the best of Baselworld 2014.

Here the Plaza Watch panel of experts select the most outstanding new releases.

The new Swing System found within hand-wound Calibre DUW 4401 is the final piece of the continuous evolution that Nomos’ movements have gone through along the way towards becoming a full-blown manufacture. The Swing System is the new Nomos-made oscillating system now utilised in all Nomos movements going forward, though it has been designed to fit into existing calibres. This is an enormous step for an independent company based outside Switzerland as it makes it as good as autonomous, important in this era of takeovers, mergers and the Swatch Group’s threat of supply stop. The Metro is the first model powered by this technical advancement, and as an added bonus it also boasts a daring new design containing all of Nomos’ own design codes and housed in a stainless steel 37mm x 7.7mm case, but pieced together to make something fully new. Carrying a price tag of just €2,600, the brand’s maxim of investing in quality rather than marketing has certainly paid off.
