The founder, Jens Hansen, was born in Denmark in 1940 and moved with his parents to New Zealand in 1952. He had his first solo exhibition at New Vision gallery in Auckland in 1960. Returning to Denmark and Copenhagen in the early 60s Hansen worked at A. Michelsen, the Court Jewellers, and at the small Borup workshop. He also attended night courses at the School of Applied Arts & Industrial design in Copenhagen. He moved to Nelson in 1968 to open Jens Hansen Gold & Silversmith Workshop. In 1973 he moved the Workshop to its present site in a modernistic building at Trafalgar Square. Two years later Jens Hansen received the Queen Elizabeth Arts Council travel grant. He died on the 10th of August 1999.
