The founder, Jens Hansen, was born in Den­mark in 1940 and moved with his par­ents to New Zealand in 1952. He had his first solo ex­hi­bi­tion at New Vi­sion gallery in Auck­land in 1960. Re­turn­ing to Den­mark and Copen­hagen in the early 60s Hansen worked at A. Michelsen, the Court Jew­ellers, and at the small Borup work­shop. He also at­tended night cour­ses at the School of Ap­plied Arts & In­dus­trial de­sign in Copen­hagen. He moved to Nel­son in 1968 to open Jens Hansen Gold & Sil­ver­smith Work­shop. In 1973 he moved the Work­shop to its present site in a mod­ernistic build­ing at Trafal­gar Square. Two years later Jens Hansen re­ceived the Queen El­iz­a­beth Arts Coun­cil travel grant. He died on the 10th of Au­gust 1999.
