In a way, the Audemars Piguet Millenary Woman is the watch that many female enthusiasts have been waiting for. In order to understand this, let’s back up a tad. A few years ago the Le Brassus-based brand introduced the oval Millenary 4101 model outfitted with the brands own Robin-inspired escapement. While the escapement doesn’t seem to be much in regular use at AP, the oval-shaped case has certainly grown on collectors, as has the technical look of its open-worked dial. The Millenary Woman is housed in a more delicate rendition (39.5mm x 9.80 mm) of that original Millenary case, which measures 47 x 13mm. The case is somewhat smaller and much more elegant thanks to its flatter nature. However, it retains all of the original Millenary look thanks to the off-centre placement of the two subdials (one showing the hours and minutes and one displaying the seconds). On the other side of the openworked dial, the balance – which oscillates alongside a regular Swiss lever escapement, albeit with variable-inertia balance wheel and free-sprung balance spring – remains in full view beating away underneath a solid gold-coloured bridge. Naturally there are gemstones involved. The one fly in the ointment regarding most watches aimed at taking shares in the growing market for female connoisseurs is that they want to force feed diamonds to us. The Millenary Woman comes in a white or pink gold oval case whose crown is set with a blue sapphire cabochon. The diamond setting ranges between a light sprinkling of 116 brilliant-cut stones (0.6kt) on the bezel and lugs of the pink gold case through 136 brilliant-cut diamonds on the dial of the white gold version (0.26kt) all the way through 438 brilliant-cut diamonds on the case and buckle of the white gold case (1.93kt).
