The RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur represents the highlight of Richard Mille’s 2015 SIHH offerings and was one of the main highlights of the entire fair. This not-just-for-women mechanical bouquet does something extraordinary even as its tourbillon ticks away

Plaza Watch International - - Sihh Roundup -

Snugly nestled inside an exquisitely painted magnolia is a flying tourbillon. Every five minutes the flower positioned at about 7 o’clock on the dial, which also features hand-painted green leaves, opens to reveal the revolving mechanical delicacy, and as it does, the flower rises above the movement by about one millimetre, using a pinion that has been embellished with gems to resemble a stamen. This motion echoes the natural upward arch of the real magnolia flower toward the sun, which it does in order to increase its chance of pollination. The “flower” stays open for five minutes, then closes again to repeat the cycle for as long as the watch stays wound. The flower can also be opened or closed on demand using a pusher on the case band. Richard Mille and his team chose the magnolia because in nature it flowers in an endless cycle of birth and regeneration, and it is also resilient to difficult environments. All of this is housed within an 18-karat white gold case measuring 45.4 x 38.3 x 12.55mm that can be ordered dripping with top-quality diamonds or left in its original white gold sheen. The Richard Mille RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur, limited to just 30 pieces, is one of my top picks thanks to the way it combines a seriously playful complication with sheer beauty and an innate understanding that there are women with sophisticated tastes where haute horlogorie mechanisms are concerned.
