Edgar Allan Poe lived in several cities along the Eastern seaboard, but he’s a permanent resident of Baltimore, where he died in October 1849. You can visit his grave at the gothic Westminster Hall Burying Grounds, where every January on Poe’s birthday between 1949 and 2009, a mysterious stranger, known as the “Poe Toaster,” would leave a bottle of cognac and three red roses on his grave in the dead of night. For unexplained reasons, the anonymous toaster gave up the gig in 2010, to return nevermore.
