FIFA and Iran Football Federation are still in a dispute over the federation’s statutes, said Mahmoud Eslamian, a member of the federation’s presiding board. The Iranian federation had made amendments to its statutes – required by FIFA – before the international football body’s June 5 deadline.

However, the major unsettled issue between the two organizations remains the administration of the federation.

“FIFA insists that all federations of its state members have to be run independently – rather than by the government,” Eslamian said.

“We have brought up the issue with the government and the Sport Ministry as the federation is not the sole decision maker in the matter,” the federation’s official added.

“I believe the President [Hassan Rouhani] needs to weigh in on the issue to avoid major blows to the country’s sport,” Eslamian said, adding that football is a “source of joy” for Iranian people.
