Erbil’s growing fashion industry is giving us something to smile about!
Fashion is transforming this ancient city, and young people are eager to express themselves through fashion.
Who would have thought that one day this city would spend millions of dollars following fashion trends? I don’t think many imagined the possibility of this city reaching this stage. New malls are popping up at every junction, and with international retail companies franchising, we’re seeing a huge number of brand stores open up locally. Fashion is now part of our lives, from our University campuses to our workplaces. It is a way of expressing ourselves, and boosting our self-esteem.
Kurdish economy is booming, with investment from international companies ranging from retail to other areas. This has created an environment where young people have the ability to choose from a wide range of brands, and shops. In the past, Kurdish people could not afford to choose from different brands, as they do now. There are many reasons for this such as greater job opportunities, higher salaries, and more avenues
For a very long time Kurdish people were unable to be a key player in the fashion world, and we’re still lagging behind. This is because historically Kurdish people were fighting to survive. Throughout our history, we’ve combatted repressive regimes, and this is why Kurdistan was unable to progress. This has changed now because Southern Kurdistan is relatively safe, and people are demanding higher quality of products.
Fashion has become so instrumental in our lives that even our traditional folklore dresses are now being affected by it. There are new fabrics being sold on a weekly, if not daily basis that highlight the latest ‘trends’. In the past couple of months, Swarovski gems on traditional folklore dresses have become a favorite, although quite pricey.
Tip of the week: Be sure to stock up for next year, major brands are now putting their winter collection on sale.
