U.S. Embassy Welcomes COM Meeting in Erbil

The Kurdish Globe - - NEWS -

We welcome the convening today in Erbil of Iraq's Council of Ministers and associated meetings, including between Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and KRG President Masoud Barzani. Coming after the unity meeting hosted last week by Sayyed Ammar al-Hakim, this is another sign that Iraqi leaders are committed to strengthening their state under the Iraqi Constitution and isolating the terrorists and criminal groups who seek to sow sectarian strife. We look forward in the coming weeks to elections in Anbar and Ninewa provinces and to the Parliament returning to session, where Iraqi leaders have pledged to address pending legislation. After the rise in violence last month perpetrated by terrorist groups including al Qaeda in Iraq, we are encouraged by the visible commitment by Iraq's political leadership to a united, federal, and democratic Iraq. The United States will remain actively engaged with the Government of Iraq and the people it serves to advance our mutual interests as defined in the Strategic Framework Agreement, including a commitment to democratic principles as defined in the Iraqi Constitution.
