Kur­dish par­tic­i­pant in the IPC World Ath­let­ics Cham­pi­onships

A twenty-five year old Kur­dish ath­lete, Ko­van Has­san, is pre­par­ing to par­tic­i­pate in the 2013 In­ter­na­tional Par­a­lympics Com­mit­tee (IPC) World Ath­let­ics Cham­pi­onships, which is to be held in the French city of Lyon in July.

Has­san, who has been pre­par­ing for the cham­pi­onships at Er­bil’s Franso Hariri Sta­dium in re­cent weeks, is op­ti­mistic. ”I am very well pre­pared, and hope­ful about per­form­ing well and get­ting some good re­sults”, he said.

Has­san said he will travel to Tur­key on July 3 to par­tic­i­pate in a four-day train­ing camp, be­fore head­ing to France to par­tic­i­pate in the events.

Dis­abled Has­san was born in Akre, and is cur­rently a cen­tral fig­ure in the Iraqi Track and Field na­tional team. He par­tic­i­pated in the Lon­don Olympics last year, and will be com­pet­ing in three events in Ly­ron: the dis­cus, javelin and ham­mer.

Lyon was the sole bid­der for the event, which will be the sixth IPC World Cham­pi­onships since Ber­lin hosted the first com­pe­ti­tion back in 1998.

The nine-day World Cham­pi­onships, the first ma­jor in­ter­na­tional Par­a­lympics ath­let­ics event since the Lon­don 2012 Par­a­lympics Games, will run from July 20-29.

The event is ex­pected to at­tract around 2,000 ath­letes and of­fi­cials from 118 coun­tries. with the likes of the four-time Par­a­lympics cham­pion Os­car Pis­to­rius of South Africa set to com­pete .
