Kurdish participant in the IPC World Athletics Championships
A twenty-five year old Kurdish athlete, Kovan Hassan, is preparing to participate in the 2013 International Paralympics Committee (IPC) World Athletics Championships, which is to be held in the French city of Lyon in July.
Hassan, who has been preparing for the championships at Erbil’s Franso Hariri Stadium in recent weeks, is optimistic. ”I am very well prepared, and hopeful about performing well and getting some good results”, he said.
Hassan said he will travel to Turkey on July 3 to participate in a four-day training camp, before heading to France to participate in the events.
Disabled Hassan was born in Akre, and is currently a central figure in the Iraqi Track and Field national team. He participated in the London Olympics last year, and will be competing in three events in Lyron: the discus, javelin and hammer.
Lyon was the sole bidder for the event, which will be the sixth IPC World Championships since Berlin hosted the first competition back in 1998.
The nine-day World Championships, the first major international Paralympics athletics event since the London 2012 Paralympics Games, will run from July 20-29.
The event is expected to attract around 2,000 athletes and officials from 118 countries. with the likes of the four-time Paralympics champion Oscar Pistorius of South Africa set to compete .
