Iraqi Football Team captain retires from football
In a statement published on his official website, the Iraqi National Team captain, Younis Mahmud has officially announced his retirement from international football. Mahmud’s last game will be against Australia during the World Cup 2014 qualification stage.
In the past few days, rumors have been spreading across the media about news that an official approach has been initiated by the AlShurta Club of Iraq to sign Iraqi national team player Younis Mahmud. The news has been circulating across the media after the player ended his season with Qatari club Al-Sadd just a few weeks ago.
But Mahmud ended the rumors as he said that no approach whatsoever was made by Al-Shurta Club of Iraq to sign him up next season.
The player previously revealed his interest to play for Al-Talaba in the Iraqi league. “I like to confirm and especially to Al-Talaba Fans that I will only play for if I ever return to the Iraqi league.”
In respect to the Iraqi fans, which stood by him in his ups and downs, Mahmud eventually decided to retire from football completely includ- ing the club level. Mahmud traveled with his team to play two matches against Oman and Japan at the 2014 World Cup qualification stage. Iraq’s dream to reach the World Cup was completely spoiled after losing both matches.
