Ashton to visit the Kurdistan Region soon
The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for the European Union, Catherine Ashton, intends to visit the Kurdistan Region and meet with the President of the KRG, Massoud Barzani.
A statement issued on Thursday June 13 by the KRG said that the Region's Representative to the EU, Dlawar Azhgayee, had visited the Foreign Policy Affairs Office of the European Union in Brussels and met with the head of the Middle East and North Africa Office and the director of the Iran, Iraq and Gulf portfolio.
The statement pointed out that the meeting covered a number of issues of common interest, but did not state the date on which Ashton is to visit the Kurdistan Region.
According to Azhgayee, the main topics discussed at the meeting with the EU officials were the recognition of the Kurdish genocide by the European Union, energy issues, and the inflow of Syrian refugees into Kurdistan. “We asked the EU to pay closer attention to the Syrian refugees, some 140,000 of whom are now believed to be in Kurdistan. In return, the EU officials reiterated that the EU Foreign Office will take a serious look at the issue”, Azhgayee told the Globe
Turning to the EU’s intention to sign an energy agreement with the Iraqi Government, Azhgayee said the KRG would welcome any energy agreement, just so long as it is within the framework of the Iraqi Constitution and is in the interests of all the components of Iraqi.
