Initial meetings are being conducted with ministries about 2014 budget
Ministry of Planning (MOP) of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has started its steps towards preparing the Region’s 2014 budget.
Initially the ministry officials meet with other ministries and institutions of the KRG to specify their needs and projects to be financed during the next year.
As part of these meetings, Dr. Ali Sindi, the Minister of Planning has met with several KRG ministers including Kamil Haji Ali, Minister of Endowment and Religious Affairs, Kawa Mahmood, Minister of Culture and Youths and Sinan Chalabi, Minister of Trade and Industry.
During the meeting with the ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs, which was attended by officials and advisers of both ministries, the two parties discussed the Ministry’s 2014 plan and the ongoing projects of the ministry that need funding in 2014 for completion.
Both parties evaluated the completion stages of the ongoing projects and the amount of funds and timeline required for their completion. Both parties emphasized on giving priority to ongoing projects rather than new projects.
During the meeting with the ministry of culture and youths, it was stated that the ministry has 66 ongoing projects all over Kurdistan Region with a total budget of IQD 148 billion (approximately US$ 124 million). The projects include building cultural centers, Paralympics, youth centers and sports halls as well as conference and meeting venues.
The ministry of trade and industry, on the other hands, is proposing 20 new projects for 2014 with a total estimated budget of IQD 230.5 billion (approximately US$195 million). The ministry officials and experts argue that these projects have long term strategic benefits for the region’s economy and its people in general.
The projects of the ministry include building silos, warehouses, labs and other buildings.
This year MOP is trying to prepare the budget more properly than previously and submit it faster to avoid delays in the approval process happened in the previous years.
